Pretty Awesome Figure, February 3, 2013

First off, I might be a bit biased, because Grimlock has always been one of my favorite characters, ever since the original series. The original figure was just as big as Optimus, but more intimidating, with a huge chest and arms, not to mention his chomping jaws in dino mode. There was just something about having a character that was just pure, brute force. The Transformers equivalent of the Hulk. I’m definitely glad that this series has a Voyager series, and equally glad that Grimlock made the cut (don’t really get why Optimus just got the deluxe treatment).
His robot mode is pretty awesome. Huge arms and chest, he stands about as tall as the Alternators version from a few years back. His clear orange sword and shield really go well, but let’s face it, Grimlock could go bare fisted and still be menacing. Articulation is also pretty good, with arms and legs having a good range of motion. An added detail that I thought was pretty cool is the Autobot symbol on his chest isn’t the standard symbol, but a modified symbol with more of a “Dinobot” flare added in. Small twist, but a cool one. The only thing I can think of that you could ask for would be for a twisting waist. All in all, this mode is where he really shines.
Dino mode, while still intimidating, has a few flaws. The one that bugged me the most was the fact that in this mode, the hips have absolutely no articulation. They are stuck in one position. The knees are the only part of the legs that can move. This causes him to sort of hunch over, so he looks smaller than he actually is. There’s also a huge hallow gap underneath that kind of reminds me of a gutted roast pig at a luau. A little weird. The last item is the tail isn’t very streamlined. For me, none of these items detracted from the fact that Grimlock is still an awesome character and still a force to be reckoned with.
He also has a light-up gimmick, where a trigger located right behind his T-Rex head will open his jaws and light up red when pulled. In robot mode, the trigger lights up his chest.
For me, personally, this is a 5 out of 5 figure, but again, I am totally biased, and I’m excited to have a Grimlock figure this size (true, the Masterpiece version is far superior, but for $20 something, it’s still pretty awesome). I know for other people, the flaws may mean more to them, so a 4 out of 5 is probably fair. I know it’s wishful thinking, but hopefully FoC Grimlock will be the first version in a long time to have some friends, in the form of Slag, Sludge, Snarl and Swoop. It’ll never happen, but I’ll keep my fingers crossed anyway.

2/21/2013 – Just an quick FYI, I picked this up at Toys R Us for like $25 or so, which is definitely cheaper than what third party sellers here are currently selling it for. However, I did see that Amazon actually sells it for cheaper when they have it in stock (didn’t realize how much of a mark up Toys has, but it’s understandable, since they have the upkeep of a brick and mortar). I was actually extremely tempted to pick up another one for the office, but after thinking about it, that would have meant taking it away from someone else who doesn’t have it yet (and who would probably have to spend more for it), so I can wait till he’s more readily available. If you can find him for around the $25 price point (and if you catch him while Amazon has him in stock), definitely pick him up.

Bottom line: this is the best Grimlock figure ever. I’ve still got the original (well, Gen 2!), and I’ve never liked any of the subsequent Grimis after that (almost bought the Alternator because it was Grimi as a Mustang, but he needs to be a t-rex!). Robot mode looks great and is well articulated. Dinosaur mode looks pretty darn good too, but loses points for some “hollowness”. Light-up features and weapons are an awesome bonus. Some reviewers have commented on his unique, altered Autobot symbol on his chest. At first I thought, “Who cares?”, but then I bought it and have to admit it is a really nice touch! (He does have the classic Autobot symbol on the top of his dinosaur head, that lights up! So purists need not worry.) Gotta say, this Grimlock is probably one of the most fun and nicest looking Transformers I’ve seen in a while, both for kids and collectors.

    * One note though – please don’t pay $40 or more for him on Amazon or other sites. I picked him up at Toys R’ Us for $29. There is no reason he should be $40 or more – Amazon needs to clamp down on their prices and those of 3rd party scalpers. Remember when collecting toys used to be fun?

I have really been underestimating the Generations line. A little bit too much here lately. Grimlock is one of those I’ve gravely underestimated. Grimlock honestly was never one of my big favorites but he was still a very likeable character. He transforms into a dinosaur! how can that not be awesome. Anyway. Read on to see how I underestimated this guy and why you need to add him to your collection ASAP!

Beast Mode. Grimlock transforms into a cybertronian Tyrannosaurus Rex. This Grimlock is truly King of the Generations line and of all previous Grimlock’s released. Beast mode looks really cool. For one he is essentially and updated version of the G1 Grimlock but still relatively unchanged. He is pretty poseable. I love the ball jointed arms as opposed to the rotating joints on the g1 version. By far the coolest gimmick with this figure is the light up gimmick. Grimlock’s eyes and mouth lights up. Looks super cool. This is by far the best use of a light up gimmick I have ever seen in a transformers Toy. Well played Hasbro. Grimlock is pretty sizeable in beast mode. He is at least two or three times bigger than his g1 counterpart. And his scale works pretty darn well with the rest of the Generations line. I was kinda upset with how small FOC Optimus was but ultimately this worked out really well. Grimlock stands well in any pose you can think of, and holds together very well.

Transformation is super simple. It will really take you back to G1 Grimlock as it’s basically an updated transformation. This is going to be super easy for the kids. I would say 6 and up should have no problem at all. Grimlock is very fun to transform despite his simplictiy. I love how his head actually tucks in his back instead of just hanging there. A great thing too. Nothing gets in the way. I love a smooth transformation.

Robot Mode…Im at a loss for words. Grimlock looks absolutely amazing. Poseability is great, the sculpt is dead on. Im a huge huge fan of the modded Autobot logo. It’s very bad______! It’s great the the Dinobot have thier own faction logo now. The light up gimmick also works in robot mode too lighting up his chest. This, like the lights in the eyes and mouth works beautifully. The chest illuminates and has the look like he stepped out of the TV screen. This truely is a toy straight from the game.Surprisingly his sword is pretty screen accurate too.

Overall this is an easy 10 out of 10. This beats the masterpiece grimlock easy in my opinion. Make sure you add this grimlock to your collection today. You wont regret it.
