To my knowledge, Thunderwing never made an appearance in the TF tv show. He was a Mega Pretender figure, which meant that he had an outer robot shell and inner robot that separately transformed into fighter jets, and combined. Thunderwing was also a big villain in Matrix Quest, a story arc in the TF comic.

Compared to other figures from this line, this is a very simple figure. The transformation takes less than a minute. I wish a bit more engineering and imagination went into this figure; I was kind of disappointed. The sculpt and colors are spot on, but there isn’t a ton of play value–the transformation is too simple (the arms don’t “go” anywhere.) I hoped for more.

Here is another G1 figure to come out in the Generations line. I don’t remember Thunderwing from the 80’s cartoon, but I was 3 (I think) when he was on the show. The figure is a good figure with it’s own issues. The transformation is very, very simple. The Drone is a nice touch, a call back to his original version.

    *robot mode*
Thunderwing’s Robot mode is very impressive. 10/10 for looks, but 9/10 for functionality. Menacing, and powerful looking. The two blasters can combine to form one massive gun and the wings for a nice “cape” effect. Unfortunately his feet weren’t planned well in my opinion. His feet do a / shape and makes his footing a little unstable. Still, a great figure for younger fans and will provide hours of fun.

    *vehicle mode*
The jet mode is unfortunate. 5/10 for looks and functionality. The top half looks great. Gives a super-sonic feel with the wings and all. But the underside (sigh). He has type 2 VHS (visual hand syndrome) and basically looks like a folded up robot, and is rather disappointing. The center chest piece folds up to hide his head, which is nice.

So this figure gets a 6.9/10. The robot mode is awesome, but the vehicle mode kills this figure. The drone and the combining blasters are great. This would be good as a starter toy for new fans.

Gosh, the new Generations line is hard to find… especially Thunderwing. Finally got my hands on him yesterday and he is amazing! Very nice in jet mode and the recon drone is a nice litte feature. Haven’t transformed him yet but I think it should be relatively easy.

My only crib about this is that the term ‘robots in disguise’ hardly applies here. :-s His head sticks out right under the cockpit in jet mode, its pretty obvious the fuselage forms his chest and arms. I mean… it’s so obvious. And it’s surprising, given how well-designed some of the newer toys are.

But I’ll take away just a single star for that… as he looks great along with the other TF jets. If you find this guy… grab him!
