I was in the market for a G1 Devastator for a while, but it always seemed so overpriced with US resellers marking the sets up. I happened to find this set here for almost 50% the price any domestic sellers were offering and took a chance at getting the set direct from Japanese vendors since delivery time wasn’t a big concern. I received my set in less than 2 weeks from Japan (very fast) and the boxed set was in great condition.

This G1 Devastator is not an exact copy of the original G1 toy. The green color, head sculpt, and touch up resemble closer to the cartoon. Like the original G1 toys, a sticker sheet is included for you to apply. I prefer the modern Generations line where the graphics are painted on…. I’ve always hated the stickers as a kid. Apart from the slight change in color from the original, the individual robots are the same in transformation and sculpt.

The box and instructions are in Japanese, but you don’t need to read the instructions to know how to transform and combine them.

I would trust these Japanese sellers to offer the same exact toy that domestic sellers are offering for almost 2x the price. Expect delivery to take at least 2 weeks, but you’ll save lots of money and get a genuine product.

Note if you want a reissue similar to the original G1 Devastator, you’ll want to get the other versions and not the Encore 20A as shown in these listings.

As stated in a previous review, all instructions are in Japanese. Assembly is easy enough using the pictures as a guide but it is a collectors item and not a useful toy for children. The parts snap together to form the figure but the final assembly is rather fragile and comes apart much to easy to be handled or manipulated. Look elsewhere if you are shopping for something that can be twisted and turned into another figure without coming apart unexpectedly.

I finally caved into 30 years of “wanting”. After the reviews I read, I wondered if this was a bad idea. Upon arrival, the product was tight, easy to manage, balanced, surprisingly detailed, and amusing to a seasoned transformers fan. I found myself smirking and smiling endlessly during the various stages of transforming, assembling, and disassembling. However, I understand that many individuals already own the original or the encore 20. If that is the case perhaps crazydevy’s various upgrade sets are for you. But for first time purchasers, it is a safe bet. If this quality is standard for this series, then I would recommend it to others that require a nostalgic pick-me-up…
