Wow Wow Wow Wow Wow Wow Wow. Everyone knows I’m not to big on retools/repaints of Optimus Prime as Ultra Magnus. BUT…this retool I’m making an exception.Mainly for one reason. Why? because this is Ultra Magnus’s appearance in the show. I wish they would have used the previous mold (Transformers Prime Powerizer Ultra Magnus) not being a retool or repaint, a mold of his own in the show But I do like this design as well. As of this review we have yet to see if the semi truck will be his alt mode, but at this point I think it’s safe to say it is. Now onto the review.

Ultra Magnus Transforms into a heavily modified Kenworth/Peterbuilt Semi with a high tech windshield and a jet pack. My one and only problem with this figure is an expectation set by stock photography. In the official image and even on the box art it shows Ultra Magnus with Smokestacks. Well…they have been entirely omitted for a reason that I can’t begin to figure out. I doubt this is a packaging error because the figure that was on display at ToyFair 13 didn’t have smokestacks either. Overall Ultra Magnus’s alt mode looks pretty darn cool. Take the jet pack off, it does look a bit awkward. He actually holds together a little bit better than the Powerizer Optimus Prime. Rolls very well and you also have a few options in Vehicle Mode much like the new Beast Hunters Optimus Prime. The wings on the Jetpack can be extended in Vehicle mode. The missiles can also be placed on the wings facing the front of the vehicle with wings extended. The missles can also store on the side. Great Retool! except for the smokestacks

Transformation is almost exactly the same as Powerizer Optimus. The chest piece is now two pieces requiring a flip out section to be moved outward after the top of the cap is lifted up. The “pads” can get a bit tricky. They need to be rotated around and then pushed down. Other than those new moves its easy and it’s something new. Parents if you child didn’t have any problem with the Powerizer Optimus he/she shouldn’t have any problem with this. You may have to help them out with the shoulder pads once but they should catch on pretty easy. For more information on how to transform Ultra Magnus to and from please refer to my fellow TFheads Optibotimus or Peaugh on Youtube. Not only will these guys review the toy but they will take you through transformation step by step with figure in hand. Makes things a ton easier for parents. Overall it’s a very fun transformation.

As for Robot Mode I’m loving it. There’s enough parts that was retooled for me to say this kinda looks like Optimus but he doesn’t.The fore arms are “new” pieces that was used on the Arms Micron Optimus Prime in Japan. You can see that on vehicle mode too where this mold now sports a 5mm peg hole on each side of the hood. This mold is pretty darn screen accurate however there are a few paint apps that could have went a long way. BUT Im sure Reprolabels will help us out later on down the road for us that’s nuts about screen accuracy (I’m one of those nuts.) Ultra Magnus does sport a slightly different head sculpt than what we saw on the Powerizer Ultra Magnus. Either way it looks great. My favorite part about this figure and I swear I nearly wet myself when found out. His missiles can store on his shoulders. Remember how G1 Magnus had his rockets on his shoulders? YEAH Love it. On that note, Thank you Hasbro for keeping G1 Alive in the new toys! Another thing I love about this figure but it’s kinda confusing at the same time is that the forge of Solus Prime is included….well….Ultra Magnus isn’t a prime….he shouldn’t be able to wield it. Either way, I think it’s awesome Hasbro included it with Ultra Magnus. I’m glad Hasbro gave us a better looking Star Saber with BH Optimus and now we just have one more relic to put in Optimus’s capable hands. As for the Jet Pack. It IS compatible with the Powerizer Optimus and it looks great on him by the way.On Ultra Magnus it looks great too. The two Wing blades are not separate pieces like BH Optimus has. They are a single piece and personally I like it better that way. I feel like it’s more stable. The Forge can store on his jetpack in either mode and the jet pack doesn’t make Ultra Magnus top heavy at all. Very balanced and he stands very well. Everything hold together awesome.

Overall this figure is a 9.9 in my book. The only thing docked is the got dang smokestacks! Why Hasbro? Why? Great figure and a MUST HAVE for your collection. If you don’t have the powerizer Ultra Magnus I recommend that one too. Wether your a collector,a fan, or a parent. you will enjoy this figure and fun won’t stop with it. It’s well worth the Money

When I was a kid, I grew up with transformers. I also got the Hasbro version of Ultra Magnus, the city commander car carrier. After a few shows of Transformers and a lot of figures of ultra magnus, I didn’t expect to find a toy figure that make justice to Magnus itself, until now.

I got addicted to the well written and excellent show “Transformers Prime” and wow, I thought myself “Where is the toy..?” And after viewing the release of the toy, let me tell you that this toy has only one thing written on him.. “awesome”.

Awesome job, well constructed (even being a remold of Transformers Prime Optimus Prime with different head), but it got all the basic elements of Ultra Magnus, even his shoulder pads. I miss the G1 missiles, and the back section of the car carrier mode, but hey, it’s a different toyline and I called “awesome”. I already do a mod to him, because the complete light blue color scheme of him was too “light-blueish”, so I already change his legs to a more dark blue color and know it’s perfect.

This figure definitely should be in your collection. And a Tip… If you want to make it even better, go to Reprolabels.com and buy the Optimus Prime sticker sheet and apply them to him. It looks “Awesome to the infinite and beyooooond!!!”

BH Voyager Ultra Magnus is my idea of the perfect Transformer. His robot mode is so… elegant. His truck mode is solid and the process is just the right blend of intricate and intuitive. He’s a very tasteful figure and while he is delightfully toy-like (a giant blue robot with a huge hammer and a jetpack and rocket launchers and he turns into a truck!) he’s also solid and almost spartan in his presentation.

He doesn’t come with any gimmicky lights or giant, unwieldy weapons. His two shoulder launchers are unobtrusive and fold up into show-accurate shoulderpads. His crazy jetpack thing is awesome and great-looking but also unobtrusive and can easily be removed.

I’ll break this guy down into some pros and cons for you:
    PRO:
-Great show-accurate mold with lots of articulation and lots of meat. There’s not a lot of gaps or shellwork in either mode.
-Battle hammer weapon. Not quite to scale as shown in the cartoon, but manageable for the figure and sturdy, no moving parts to rattle around or break.
-Giant winged jetpack. Who doesn’t like jetpacks? Easily removable.
-Overall, just a great presentation of the figure. Paint where he needs it, lots of color but no crazy clashes or anything too wild. Ultra Mags’ figure is pretty representative of his personality, it seems.
-Some great details. For example, the walls of his sleeper cab that fold up onto his back have a little circuitry pattern molded into the underside, not visible in either robot or truck mode. That kind of attention to detail is what really clinches it for me.

    CON:
-A few mild concerns over durability. His jetpack requires a bit of force to mount and dismount, and his transformation has a few steps that could result in breakage if you’re trying to move a part the wrong way.
-As stated before, his hammer is small compared to it’s onscreen version.
-It might just be mine, but the rotation joint just above the elbow seems to come loose easily. It’s fixable, but annoying at times.

Overall, Ultra Magnus is an amazing toy for both kids and collectors. I feel like it could stand up to just as much punishment as any other modern Transformer, and it has a great range of poseability for collections. The design philosophy displayed with this figure is everything I look for in a figure, and I feel like it’s easily worth the price of admission. I’d recommend him in a heartbeat.
