Battle Decepticons and Defend Earth with Optimus Prime

The Autobots were perilously close to a destiny-altering defeat in the Battle of Chicago. Their leader, Optimus Prime, suffered heavy damage, but managed to survive the battle, dealing a crushing blow to his arch-nemesis Megatron in the process. While the Decepticon leader may have fallen, new threats have risen in his place. If the Autobots are to defend the planet they have sworn to protect, they must find a way to defeat powerful new enemies. In a world where their standing is more uncertain than ever, one thing remains constant: their unyielding leader, Optimus Prime, will be at the forefront of the coming battle.

I’ll be the first to admit that $59.99 is not an easy price to swallow for this figure. I have been a Transformers collector and enthusiast for a very long time. I love the toys, evolving story lines, and the amount of ingenuity that goes into making toys for kids and kids at heart. What you are getting here is not the Holy Grail of figures by any means. You are getting a decent size representation of a Leader class Optimus Prime with a little bling thrown into the mix. This figure is designed to be played with and having had it for a little over 24 hours now I can say that I have transformed him multiple times and enjoy the ease of transformation. I could give this figure to my 5 year old niece and she would be able to figure it out. If you’re looking for quantity (hefty plastic, beefed up robot mode, multiple unnecessary weapons, etc) then this is not the right figure for you. If you are looking for play quality and simplicity then this is what you are going to get. The multiple negative reviews are from die hard collectors and fanboys. You have to really appreciate this figure from a child’s perspective. I have this figure displayed next to my more complex Primes and I like the design evolution.

    Update 02.10.14

I would uphold my high review if it had not been for the problems starting on my figure. This figure has a lot of chrome and I mean an excessive amount in all the wrong places. Chrome has been placed on key heavy transformation used pieces and the chrome has started to rub off not only the grill of my figure but the back of the legs in several places. I’m very careful with my figures and a kid probably won’t even notice the chrome rubbing off, but this has caused me to change my 5 star review to a 3 star review based on play durability. You know Hasbro had these in tests centers with kids before ever going into mass production and regardless they chromed a figure that put a hefty premium on it. I will be calling Hasbro Customer Support to complain.

    Update #2 02.10.14

I spoke with Hasbro rep and will be returning my figure for a refund. I think I’ll wait for the retail version that will not have chrome in all the wrong places.

I can understand somewhat why this figure is getting mixed reviews. Being the size of a leader class toy, but having such a simplified transformation may indeed turn some people off. If you know that you ONLY like super complicated transformers, then you might not want to get this one. That said, I don’t think it is ALL that simple. It will take you a few minutes to transform it from one mode to another. Others might find fault with the large “backpack” that is on the rear of the robot mode. This is primarily because this is a “shell former” and also because it is a simplified transformation. Keep in mind though that this is an “Age of Extinction” movie line figure, and the character model it represents from the movie has little to no recognizable truck parts in it’s robot mode. Because of that, there is really no way to make a figure of this character model without making it a shell former. I personally found the transformation to be enjoyable, and somewhat refreshing as there really aren’t too many shell forming transformers around, especially this size. I think the figure looks nice in both modes, the vehicle mode being the better of the two. They are both good though, and the robot mode has an almost vintage transformers look with it’s extensive use of chrome. This is something that was used heavily in the late 80’s and early 90’s, especially on the dino bots line of toys. It may be that fact that makes me feel as though this toy has a retro look to it. Anyway, it pretty much looks just like the photos. If you don’t mind the simple transformation, shell forming, and backpack, then I think you will love this figure too! $60 probably is a bit too much, but only a bit. I would say that $45 would be a fair price for this figure, being that it is somewhat simplified from what has been released in the last several years. But being that this is a limited “First Edition”, and as such may be an exclusive mold, or at the very least an exclusive deco, I don’t think the price is at a crazy level. I personally hope that this mold is released again, but if it is it certainly may not have all the chrome, so if you are into that, now would be a good time to buy.

*Update* While I still like this figure, it does have some quality issues with it’s paint. This is one best left in the box, or just displayed and not handled very much. The chrome on my figure started to wear off enough to notice literally the same day the figure arrived, so you can imagine what it looks like now. I decided just to treat it as a child would, as a test. It has been handled and transformed many times. As a result, the chrome on the grill is all but gone. There are also spots on the shoulder pads as well as the legs where the chrome is completely gone. Also, the red paint used to make the flame details on the vehicle mode has issues. It chips away very easily. Think scrapping glue off of a plastic surface. In other words, it isn’t difficult at all to remove basically all the paint from this figure. So easy in fact, you will probably do it by accident. The chrome failing within a matter of hours is pretty bad, certainly. So, if you really want to keep it nice, don’t bother opening the box. I will just custom paint this one once all the paint has been removed. That said, I still enjoy the figure very much, and am still glad I bought it. I will likely order another one to keep in box.

I had recieved my A.O.E First Edition Optimus Prime on the 2/6/14. Came rather quickly ordered on the 3rd. Now when I opened my package I was grabbed immediately by the artwork and the box art its beautiful and badass. Now the figure itself I was very uncertain of at first glance inside the packaging. The Sword and Sheild are huge. The Chrome light piping looked too much. Then after i had taken it out of its package and stood before me, I wasn’t impressed yet I was rather suprised. It looks pretty good in robot mode and the piping wasn’t bad at all it inhanced it’s overall look. The back takes a time to get use too but its not that bad niether. Keeping in mind of the route Hasbro is taking with the simpler less complex approach I’d my only fear was that they would sacrifice detail in design in order to do so, however it is contrary, it doesn’t and the open faceplate give it a intimadating appeal to him…is it a shell former? Perhaps but it is without justice. It percise and straight to the point it simpler and easy. No need to justify that…now the vehicle mode is where it truly shines, its superb and the creases are tight that it doesn’t look like it transforms at all Imo. The Chrome the paint apps everything about this Truck is great. They couldve chromed the rims $60.00(need I say more)…rubber tires nice touch. Now the downsides:the hands do not swivel the forearm to the hands are whole mold. Thats it, really good articulation some restriction due to the gas tanks hanging down along his side, ankle artics’ now I like the new direction I understand the choice, there’s going to be flaws but they achieved to make these flaws unconcerning. Its a good figure its not an Rotf Optimus, its a AOE Optimus. This is a collectors item I’m a collector and if you do not purchase this version now you’ll regret it financially later. Trust this is the version that Takara would put out, but Hasbro finally made a good call and they release this version instead. This guys is a limited edition. So if your still stuck on ROTF Optimus don’t purchase him, if your over Rotf Optimus and ready to move on cop this piece. I’m not saying I love it, but I do like it a lot. So do I indorse this piece? Absolutely.

My husband had been hinting at getting OP for a very long time. I kept telling him it was absurd to pay nearly $80 for a toy. Generally, we don’t spend that much for toys for our kids… Of course, I was just trying to keep him from buying it for himself. He got it on Father’s day and I’m pretty sure he almost cried. Fulfilled a childhood dream!

This product arrived on time and well protected in the box. Couldnt have asked for a better Optimus Prime to add to my collection. Has real metal parts on it and is a gorgeous piece. I recommend this to any and all fans of the series.
