Sideswipe (or Lambor) is a classic 1st generation Autobot warrior. This is a Masterpiece version from Takara Tomy.

He comes in a very slick box with lots of glossy photos and art. It’s very collector friendly with a formed tray inside holding the car and accessories in place. The instructions, also with lots of nice photos and art, and a little collector card are underneath the tray. Popping him out and back into the box is very easy.

He’s packaged in Lamborghini Countach mode. The car form is near perfect in replicating the look of this very cool looking vehicle to the point that if you didn’t know it was a Transformer you might think it was just a very nice model of a Lamborghini (but it’s more than meets the eye you know). There are a couple of visible joint lines but nothing too bad.

Transformation is not extremely difficult but is a challenge the first couple of times. Fortunately, aside from one small area, the picture directions are pretty easy to follow. Just go step by step. It is a pretty sensible design overall with the back of the car becoming the legs, the top becoming the back, the hood the chest and the doors the arms.

Robot form is amazingly cool looking with lots of detail. The head and face look very cool and there is a lot of good texture on his legs and arms. He even has some robot abs. If I had to pick a couple of negatives it would be that his legs are hollow when seen from the inside of his stance. That couldn’t really be helped and doesn’t stick out too bad. The other is that I wish the shoulders connected up to his body at the “neck plate” somewhere as it looks a little odd that they don’t from certain angles.

He is very poseable with a cut neck, shoulders and elbows that rotate and bend, pin fingers (all one piece on one hinge), cut waist, great universal style hips, knees that bend and some ankle articulation. Plenty to get tons of poses and the joints are all smooth but solid so he can hold poses easily. Plus his feet have lots of surface area so he stands great.

The paint detailing is very good in most areas with little details like the little Lamborghini emblem in the hood and wording on the back in evidence. And the Autobot symbol on his chest looks perfect. It’s the more sweeping aspects that let down a bit. Slight variations in color shade and areas of chipping are both evident. Though overall the car color looks great (especially the hood / chest in robot mode) but I really worry that continued chipping may be an issue.

His accessories are a silver hand cannon that can be held in either hand and a white shoulder cannon that can go on either shoulder and can tilt up or down. These can be combined into one weapon and attached to the top of the car as well. He also has two “pile driver” attachments (basically flat black squares) that can replace his fists. I suppose these are for the really serious beat downs.

All in all I’m happy with the guy. He looks great on both modes and just some minor quibbles over the look and paint hold him back from perfect for me. It’s also worth mentioning that I thought he might be a touch larger. He clocks in at about 6 ½ inches tall and is pretty stout overall but I thought he’d be just a bit more beefy I guess. There was a touch of sticker shock at first but I got over it quickly. If you’re willing to plop down the cash then you’ll probably be happy with this figure overall.

Pros: This is the version of Sideswipe we’ve been waiting nearly 30 years for. A highly detailed reproduction of a Countach LP500S, licensed by Lamborghini itself, with all the visual cues and details from the original 1984 toy and cartoon wrapped up in one modern package. The figure is well engineered and sturdy. Although the transformation process is moderately complex, it is never a frustrating experience and ends up being quite enjoyable and fun.

Cons: This toy is aimed at the adult collector market and is expensive. As such, the figure should have had a much cleaner paint job. There are spots on mine where the paint is rough or incomplete. Also, the side panels are designed in such a way as they do not fit snugly together causing slight gaps. Not really a deal-breaker, but it is a slight disappointment as the car has been so faithfully reproduced and the gaps or ill-fitting pieces detract from the overall sleek look.

I give this a five star rating hands down, why? It’s awesome. transformation is simple and easy, vehicle and robot modes look incredible. I am aware about the Knock offs that everyone was talking about. If you’re reading this and you want to know what the tells are, its actually simple. THE REAL DEAL 1. the headlights on the figure should have a black trim around it. 2. with a micro scope (if you have trouble seeing things up close) the Lamborghini insignia, although small, should have a noticeable “writing” that says Lamborghini right above the bull. (fake ones have just a gold blob) 3. The boxes background cover should not be as shiny as the figures pic. That being said, hope it helps for those of you who are picky and don’t want the risk of getting a K.O. I’m not going to rule out the knock offs either, if you just want the masterpiece experience, then a knock off might just be what your looking for if you’re not wanting to empty your wallet. It all depends on what you think. the figures articulation is top notch. you can make almost any pose. comes with the shoulder cannon, gun, and two pile drivers for the hands. definitely add this to your collection.
