I’ve started to get back into Transformers. Maybe I’m trying to relive my childhood or I’m having a 1/3 life crisis. I’ve had my eyes on the Masterpiece collection for a few months now and finally bit the bullet, beginning with Prowl. This was packaged up very nicely and protected. The box actually came in Japanese, which was a nice touch. The same went for the instructions. It’s a good thing I played with Legos as a child and was able to figure out the instructions and how to put Prowl from vehicle to robot mode. The quality is good and does’t feel cheap. He has good weight. I had a few scares as some of the parts stuck and I was afraid I was going to snap something. I’m impressed so far and will attempt to purchase the other. My only gripe is the price but after thinking about it and looking back, what I paid in the 80’s is probably close to today’s money. Go out and start your collection!

I own the first Masterpiece Transformer: an Optimus Prime/Convoy MP-01. He’s over a foot tall, half his body is diecast. He has rubber wheels and working suspension, all his fingers can move independently, has opposable thumbs and full articulated wrist joints. He has two flip open arm comms, a moveable mouth plate and light up matrix that unfolds from his chest. He was worth every cent!

Prowl on the other hand is barely 6 inches tall, is made out of nothing but plastic – including the wheels. All his fingers are a single mold and his thumbs can’t move at all. And the only extra he comes with is his gun. This is no more impressive then my kid’s Transformers Animated voyager class figures that are the same size, made of the same plastic, have the same level of articulation and the same level of detail respective to the source material and they only cost like 25 bucks! This Prowl is basically an overpriced voyager class figure. I don’t know what happened to the Masterpiece line to turn it into this but it makes me sad.
