Let’s be clear – I hate this toy. Not only does it not transform (lifting tail and head up and down does not transform a dinosaur) but it is ridiculously loud. So loud that my 4 year old was scared to get near it and cried. He is a bit sensitive but I broke out the duct tape, covered the speaker and it is now reasonably loud. He has now declared it his “favorite toy ever.” The rescue dinobot has more than a dozen phrases but my son has decided he is part digger and is very effectively using his tail to dig for rather than rescue toys. Oh and his mouth has already chomped Cheerios and Goldfish.
He has accompanied us to the park, a birthday party and bed. How can I not give my son’s new best friend 4 stars?

o I am deeply ambivalent about this toy — a rare thing for me. It is what you see, but when something is described as a Transformer, I expect it to well….transform. Obviously making a Transformer for a five-year-old is a real design challenge, which what makes Playschool’s Optimus Primal toy so impressive. This looks like it should transform — not the wheels on the legs and the backhoe tail — but what you see is what you get. Now you may know that when purchasing, but your kid, especially young kids, may not be at all so understanding, and keep yelling at you to to transform it, and then cry… well you get the idea.

Design is another issue. The plastic feels cheap. While $20+ isn’t a king’s ransom, I’d expect something more solid. Moreover, for the price, I’d expect playschool to throw in an action figure of Heatwave’s partner Kade (you know, like it shows on the cartoon on the box). But no, he’s sold separately. When it says it “includes action figure,” it should probably be clearer and say “by which I mean the dragon, as what you see is what you get.” And lastly, understand that this thing is LOUD. And I’m not someone who minds noisy toys, but this just kicks the decibels up more than most.

I’d give it two and a half stars, but rounded down for general disappointment.

My autistic 9 year old loves this toy. It’s really fun how it lights up in addition to sound (though lights really are battery eaters). It came with batteries, which is nice. The only thing would make it 5 stars is if it walked like some of the fisher price dinosaurs do. It turns out my other 9 year old son likes this toy a lot too, even though it says for up to age 7.
