I am really impressed with Hasbro’s entry into brick toys. We’re LEGO loyalists around here and weed all pretenders out of the toy boxes. I associate non LEGO brick toys with a cheap feel and poor compatibility. KRE-O bricks are so close to LEGO in quality that I think most parents will have a hard time telling the difference. The plastic is very close, just a shade stiffer than the LEGO brick. This means it’s much easier to pop two KRE-O bricks apart (you won’t need a table knife of a brick separator) but it also means that some builds may be a shade less stable as they won’t have as much give as a LEGO joint will. This is a tiny difference, really. In fact, my KRE-O set came one brick short (it had the right brick, but the wrong color) to complete the figure and I swapped a LEGO brick in without any trouble. The colors were also very close, making it difficult to tell where the LEGO brick was in the completed build.

KRE-O instructions are easy to follow and I think the age range of 8 – 14 is pretty much correct. My 7 year old was unable to build the model alone, but I think she would be able to do it next year. There are a lot of pieces to these sets, a little bit more than comparably priced LEGO kits. Also included were two figures. The “Kreons” were roughly the same size as a LEGO Minifig, but very different in construction. Hasbro has chosen to ball joint the arms and legs. They aren’t quite as jointed as Diamond Select Halo Minimates: Series 1 Boxed Set, but you can swivel the arms and legs, which you cannot do with a LEGO Minifig. The ball joints concern me, I could see them becoming wear points and eventually leading to figures with joint attachment issues.

While the blocks are completely interchangeable the Minifigs and Kreons are not. I know a lot of people do customization of their figures, so I took the Kreons to one of the artists featured in Minifigure Customization: Populate Your World!. Tothiro said that the hip joints could be reworked to be used together so it was possible you could take a LEGO upper body and give it the jointed KRE-O lower body (or vice versa), but it would strictly be something a hobbyist would do. The kids won’t be able to swap parts. (He was also impressed with the quality of the KRE-O bricks but shared my concern about long term durability of the figure’s joints when used by children.) KRE-O has absolutely hit their target market with this product. My kid loved the branding, she loved the styling and I liked the quality. I never let her get non LEGO brick sets but I think that KRE-O is going to be on my approved purchase list.

Starscream is the coolest!Starscream is one of the best quality Kre-o sets in the line. This bad boy comes with awesome detail in robot or fighter jet mode.In robot mode there is great articulation in the arms, legs, body and the classic G1 style head piece. In fighter jet mode there is realistic detail from the cockpit and working landing gear to the turbine thrusters in the back.Starscream comes with some sweet weapons like the classic arm missiles and a arm cannon with firing projectile.I love how they did Starscream in the classic G1 style to make this Kre-o set even more kick-ass.Starscream comes with two kreons that are Starscream and a pilot. The poseability is outstanding with great stability for creating cool battle scenes or unique poses for displaying where you please. The durability is excellent as well with all pieces fitting securely together for a solid build in either robot or fighter jet mode. The Kre-o sets are a great idea that creates bonding time for a parent and child while being able to learn a creative construction process. The age level is 8-14 meaning Starscream is made more for the older age group. If you are a parent buying for a child of 5-6 or younger you will have to help in the construction process. Each mode will take 2-3 hours to build, but is totally worth the time when you have an amazing final product.Starscream has 316 pieces in which some are very small so you will need to be careful not to misplace any of them.Bottom line Starscream is a well-made,high quality,10 out of 10 Kre-o construction set that all transformer fans will enjoy.I highly recommend Starscream to all transformer fans and collectors out there.Starscream Rocks and Transformers Rule!!!

The KRE-O Transformer Starscream kit is very similar to Legos, only with a few flaws. This kit comes with a colorful book including instructions to build the robot that you see, or a fighter plane. My husband and seven-year-old son chose to make the fighter plane.

Colorful instructions, but a couple of the gray colors are so close it was hard for them to tell the parts apart.

Sturdy pieces, yet when the plane was assembled, some of the parts fell off with gentle use.

Overall, this was fun for them to assemble together. The issue is (at least with the fighter plane), as you play with it, the pieces fall off. We have never had that problem with Legos. If an adult has a hard time moving the plane without losing pieces, a kid will be more rough and it will never stay together long.

So, in future, I think we’ll stick with Lego sets so we can play without constantly re-assembling.
