This is a great toy, well made and it allows children to use their imagination and construct it in a number of different ways. The one drawback is the number of pieces, 542! The product is recommended for children ages 8-14, I would definitely not purchase this for an 8 year old. My almost 10 year old was very frustrated and my 13 year old and I had to end up constructing the model. Definitely for older children. When constructed it is an amazing toy and fun for both my 9 and 13 year old sons, just expect to a long evening playing and construction KRE-O if you are purchasing this for anyone 10 and under (unless they have an Einstein IQ and an equally long attention span).

My 8 year old nephew was ecstatic when he tried out this Transformers Optimus Prime building block kit by Kre-O (Hasbro). He has seen all the newest Transformers movies and cartoons and has even watched most of the original cartoon TV series from the ’80s.

    Likes:
    >Bold, colorful packaging that promises lots of fun!
    >Can be built into Optimus Prime (OP) robot, Big Rig Truck, or Battle Station.
    >Includes 2 mini motorcycles and 5 mini Kreon characters; OP, Skywarp, Bluestreak, and two stunt drivers.
    >Helps child develop patience and perseverance to finish assembling this toy.
    >Looks impressive when finished.

    Dislikes:
    >My 8 year old nephew is familiar with Lego and generic building blocks but it took him about 3 hours (with some help from dad) to assemble the 542 pieces OP robot because most of the blocks don’t fit and stay locked together properly.
    >The assembled OP robot is more suitable for static display because every time my nephew tried to play or pose the robot, pieces would fall off.
    >His dad (bro) and I agree: Why have children build static display kits using blocks when there are many excellent poseable and playable Transformers 3 Dark of the Moon Revoltech SciFi Super Poseable Action Figure Optimus Prime of Transformers available?
    >The whole purpose of building blocks is to allow children to use their imaginations to build different robots, vehicles, animals, monsters, etc. from generically shaped blocks…rather than building block kits limited to building a pre-determined character or vehicle.
    >Built up robot CAN’T TRANSFORM; the main allurement of the Transformers!
    >While my older nephew enjoyed the puzzle type challenge of assembling the OP robot in several hours, his 4 year old brother took delight in smashing OP into pieces with the mini motorcycles within minutes. Definitely NOT for younger children.
    >Many small parts are potential choking hazards for younger siblings.

    Bottom Line:
A challenging kit to build for kids older than 8 even with adult assistance. A pre-determined block kit doesn’t help children develop their imaginations and creativity compared to something like LEGO Bricks Set. Why buy a Transformer toy that can’t transform, is time-consuming to build, and falls apart when kids try to pose or play with it?

First off, I built both The Optimus Prime and the Semi-Truck, several times. I followed the instructions, but there was a few discrepancies with the pieces and fitting things together. I was able to make it work, but I doubt even an adept Lego building teenager would’ve figured out a viable work-around as quickly (several hours) as I did. Ahem.

I didn’t like the way the bricks were organized out of the box, but I feel that way about ALL Lego sets, Mega Blocks kits in total. It could use some better organization from the jump for the amount of coin you drop on these. Huge plastic bags make no sense.

The flexibility of the two models once built was also questionable as it was better to just leave them there like Museum pieces to stare at versus moving them around as several portions just wouldn’t stay together.

I’m not a Lego purist and I don’t bash on Mega Blocks for being cheap, as they’ve improved greatly in the last 5 -8 years that I’ve been building with them, but Kreo needs to fine-tune these sets a bit in my opinion.

I appreciate the value you get with Lego’s competitor sets, but I would just like to see better “form-fitting” as they call it and “ease of build.”

It’s hard to please every one, I know; but these transformers sets are definitely for the expert builder who just aches for anything Transformers.

I spent hours building this stuff and most of the time it wasn’t much fun. Just saying.
